Susanna  Print

August 2008

SusannaWhat a great dog we’ve chosen for our very first Wine Dog! Susanna is a St. Bernard from Nottola in Montepulciano, Italy. She probably weighs 120-140 pounds—a big momma! She is good-natured, kind, gentle and easy-going—all typical traits of the breed. Her owners take great care of her and even spoil her with her very own dog-sized bench to lounge around on the winery’s porch. Most people are probably already familiar with this breed’s original job in life of being rescue dogs in the High Swiss Alps. Who hasn’t seen them depicted with small barrels of brandy around their necks (you know…to provide the rescued with warmth to combat the cold)? After getting to know Susanna a bit, we’re sure she would prefer some of Nottola’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva and a vigorous belly rub, for which she’ll glady roll onto her back to accommodate!

Susanna’s owner, Luisa, sent us these additional pictures (below), for which we are very grateful. We provided the captions.

Susanna was a very cute puppy. She has matured into a lovely young lady.

Dear Rich,
I’m Luisa, Giuseppe’s wife and Susanna’s owner. I’m very happy about the Susanna page on your web site and she wants to say you thanks a lot to be a dog of the month.
Susanna is four and an half years old and she lives with us since she was 2 months old. Susanna is not her really name because her name is Maya di casa Dupré but, when I took her I looked her face and say: you are Susanna. She likes very much to play with children, to play on the snow and, of course, to have breakfast with sandwiches with ham.
She has a boy friend, Alfredo is the name, but Alfredo, like the most italian men, is a latin lover than we have to choose a different and serius boy friend for her.
Any serious american Saint Bernard available for Susanna?
Thanks a lot for a very pretty idea.
Kind regards,
Luisa

Luisa,
Thanks so much for sending us the pictures and the additional information about Susanna. I am sure there are many American Saint Bernards who would love to visit Italy to see such a beautiful young lady as Susanna. We’ve put the pictures onto the site above for all to enjoy. Our best regards to you, Giuseppe, Susanna and even Alfredo.
Thanks for writing!
